Medical Examiner Q & A

Why do I need to see a medical examiner?

You may have to see a medical examiner if you need a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, which is required if you operate a vehicle at your place of work. The DOT requires people who drive as part of their job to have a commercial driver's license (CDL).

To obtain your CDL, you need to pass a DOT physical that certifies you’re medically safe and physically fit to drive. The DOT physical features an extensive range of health checks to make sure your ability to drive isn’t affected by conditions such as:

  • Glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration
  • Perforated eardrums or scarring
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Heart murmurs or irregularities
  • Breathing problems
  • Enlarged liver
  • Muscle wastage
  • Hernias
  • Varicose veins
  • Musculoskeletal injuries
  • Neurological problems
  • Diabetes

These conditions don’t necessarily disqualify you from obtaining a CDL; you just may need more frequent physicals. Only medical examiners who have a license from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and are on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners can carry out DOT physicals.

What happens during my exam with the medical examiner?

When you come into JNT Natural Medicine for your medical examination appointment, your doctor has to perform certain tests and screenings, based on the Medical Examination Report form. Your DOT physical may include:

  • Vision and hearing screening
  • Evaluation of health history
  • Neurological evaluation
  • Blood pressure check
  • Physical exam

Your doctor also gathers blood and urine samples and conducts required drug and alcohol testing as part of your DOT physical.

How do I prepare for my medical examination appointment?

To help you prepare for your medical examination appointment at JNT Natural Medicine, you need to bring a valid driver’s license. If you have a history of chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, bring any relevant medical records with you or forward them to the clinic.

Lastly, if you take any prescription or over-the-counter medications, including dietary supplements, bring the bottles with you or make a list of them (including the dosages). Once your DOT physical from JNT Natural Medicine is complete, your doctor processes your essential paperwork.
